What's New
2002 marks the 300th anniversary of the beautiful port city of Mobile. (The city was established by a French explorer prior to the founding of America.)
The Battle House Hotel is currently being renovated, and is slated to open in 2004.
Don't miss
Be delighted by Mobile’s Mardi Gras celebration of parades and feasts, the first in the nation. For something a bit quieter, tour the historic house museums of Mobile (334-432-1281). For $14, see Oakleigh, an 1833 Greek revival home just minutes from Mobile. It features costumed docents, priceless works of art, and numerous outbuildings, not to mention the Bragg-Mitchell, Conde-Charlotte, and Richards-DAR house museums.
Take in the exhibit “Picturing French Style: Three Hundred Years of Art and Fashion” at the new Mobile Museum of Art (208-5200) which includes 17th-century court portraits to Chanel’s haute couture fashions.
Local flavor
Downtown Octopus/Fusion Sushi (334-438-4535) combines Japanese recipes with Southern flavors. Dreamland Bar-B-Q (800-752-0544) offers world famous sauce and ribs. Three Georges (334-433-6725) on Dauphin Street is famous for hand-made candy including chocolate shrimp!
Shopping
Flea Market Mobile (334-633-7533), Alabama’s largest, boasts more than 700 booths. You're almost guaranteed to find something unique. Mobile also has a handful of gourmet food stores and several places to scout out antiques.
Recreation
Relax on Dauphin Island with its estuarium, Civil War historical site, uncrowded beaches, golf course, and deep-sea fishing in the Gulf of Mexico. Ranked as one of the top ten in golf value by Gold Digest, Mobile offers an exciting variety of challenging courses. Eight courses are located within a short distance to the city. Visitors can explore the Mobile-Tensaw Delta and check out the natural wildlife by covered tour boat or by kayak and canoe.
